Abstract (AB)M 1156/66 and M292/70 were released for commercial exploitation in 1988. The three varieties are high-yielding and better suited for harvesting during the first half of the crop season. M1156/66 is specifically adapted to H, L and P soils of the lower rainfall areas. M695/69 and M292/70 are higher yielding than M1156/66 and perform well in a wide range of agro-climatic regions. However, M695/69 ought to be exploited in lower rainfall areas only because of its susceptibility to yellow spot disease and M292/70 in higher rainfall areas only because of its susceptibility to gumming disease.
