Abstract (AB)In this paper, the succession of sugar cane under cultivation during the past 125 years in Mauritius is reviewed. The factors that have been responsible for the continuous change are mentioned as well as the methods available for the production of better varieties and finally an insight in the future is given. Until the end of the last century the island was cultivated solely with foreign varieties of noble canes. All of these have given place one by one to hybrid canes many of which are produced locally. The degeneration of varieties, which is responsible for their replacement, can be attributed to various pathological factors some of which are still unknown. The longer a variety has been under cultivation the greater its degree of contamination, hence its downfall. Various diseases acting together may have increased effects. There will probably be a greater number of commercial varieties in the near future, each one having been selected in and for a special locality. There are indications that if the present varieties under cultivation were adequately distributed in the various localities of the island, the sugar production would be appreciably increased.
