Abstract (AB)Leaching of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-S-triazine) was studied in field lysimeters at Belle Rive (F soil, 3700 mm rain/year) and Réduit (L soil, 1550 mm rain/year). When used at the normal rate (2,4 kg a.i./ha) concentrations of atrazine in leachates at 1.0 m soil depth were below the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of 3.0 µm/L and total leaching losses were 0.32 and 0.045 per cent respectively of the amount applied at Belle Rive and Réduit. At a higher rate (4.8 kg a.i./ha) concentrations in leachate exceeded the MAC and per centage leaching losses were 1.0 and 0.2 respectively in the superhumid zone of Belle Rive and humid region of Réduit. The magnitude of leaching loss was dependent on the volume of leachate and the proximity of leaching events to the date of application. The half-life of atrazine in the top 30 cm of soils varied between 36 and 59 days.
