Abstract (AB)The toxicity of an amorphous silica dust to Reticulitermes santonensis on wood surface was assessed at 84.3 per cent and 90.2 per cent RH. Silica aerogel Sipernat 22S (Wessalon S) was applied as an aqueous slurry and as a dry powder. The toxicity of the deposit was determined using 48h and 96h bioassays. A comparative study was conducted with Sitophilus granarius (L.). The compound was found to be very toxic to termites, with a higher toxicity at 84.3 per cent RH, but there was no correlation with increasing concentrations. The results suggest that the rate of pick-up by R. santonensis was influenced by their behaviour. A behavioural study was also undertaken to investigate the effect of a glycol, a trail pheromone analogue, on the toxicity of dust to R. santonensis. The investigations provided evidence of non-uniform pick-up of dust at very low concentration by R. santonensis. They also suggest the possibility of increasing the toxicity of the dust by confusing the behavioural pattern of R. santonensis.
