Abstract (AB)Surveys were conducted in fields of variety S17 at 63 sites in 1977 and 1978 to determine the intensity of infection in different areas of the island. Losses due to the disease in different environments were assessed by comparing diseased plots kept disease-free by weekly sprays of the fungicide Benomyl. It was estimated that about 3100 hectares were affected on miller-planters' land in 1977, with a loss of 2500 to 5000 tonnes of sugar. Estimates for 1978 were 4200 hectares affected and 5200 to 8700 tonnes of sugar lost.
