Abstract (AB)A new sugar cane variety, M 2593/92, has been released for cultivation in 2006. This variety is high-yielding with above average sucrose content and medium fibre content. It is adapted to the subhumid/humid zones and is suitable for early-, mid- and late season haravest. It is resistant to gumming, smut and leaf scald and highly susceptible to yellow spot. Results from trials indicated that in the subhumid irrigated zone its sugar yield at early harvest was much higher than R 575, which is widely cultivated for that harvest period in the Western sector of the island, whereas at late season harvest it was much higher than the three popular control varieties R 570, M 1176/77 and M 1400/86. Its sugar productivity at mid-season harvest was also better than the controls in the humid deep L2 soils. The variety has a esmi-erect growth habit with an average number of fairly tall cane stalks of medium diameter. Its germination is excellent, ratoons well and flowers moderately. Due to its extended harvesting period, this vatriety can be valuable in the low-lying areas where outbreaks of fire are common.
