Abstract (AB)In Mauritius there is an urgent need to increase maize production substantially in order to reduce imports. Maize is presently grown in different climatic zones. The varietal requirements of various planter groups practising different cultivation methods are examined. The short term, medium term and long term objectives of the breeding programme are discussed in relation to production systems. The modest achievements highlight the shortcomings of the programme. Corrective measures are proposed.
