Abstract (AB)Stirling, a newly imported potato variety, originating from Scotland has been recommended for commercial planting. This variety has been under test from 1992 to 1994 in the current MSIRI programme of screening foreign varieties. It gave 9 per cent and 29 per cent higher marketable yield (tubers>50 g) than Spunta in the first and second seasons, respectively. It is as tolerant as Spunta to late blight but more susceptible to bacterial wilt. Tuber dry matter content is rather low making the variety unsuitable for processing into French fries or crisps.
