Abstract (AB)More than 70 species of soil pests, including nematodes, have been associated with sugar cane in Africa and neighbouring islands. White grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) appear to be the dominant species both in damage levels and distribution. Termites and nematodes are relatively less important, and the cicada Yanga guttulata is restricted to Madagascar. Margarodids are not important, although large populations may lead to an over-estimation of their economic importance. The bioecology, economic importance and existing control methods are reviewed. Soil pest biology is discussed in relation to status and efficacy of control measures. The importance of laboratory rearing of various pests and problems encountered, especially with white grubs, are also exposed. Future prospects and spheres of research are suggested.
