| Inefficient weed control is a major constraint to productivity among sugar cane growers. The choice of herbicide, timing of application and spraying techniques were the targeted areas which necessitated closer interaction between research, extension and the farmer. A model planter was chosen among a group of seven planters growing about 300 ha of sugar cane in one specific locality. An on-farm trial was set up to campare his practices with those recommended by the MSIRI, emphasis being laid on appropriate weed management practices. Results showed an increase in yield and a reduction in the cost of herbicide application by the adoption of MSIRi recommendations. The trial has highlighted the role of extension in the promotion of new technologies developed by research to increase productivity. | |
