Abstract (AB)The objectives and results of research undertaken in Mauritius to improve potato production in interline of sugar cane are discussed. A major effort has been laid on the selection of varieties from various sources that are better adapted to local conditions and are tolerant to the two main diseases: late blight and bacterial wilt. The control of these two diseases has improved, especially the former which is now well controlled by spraying with better fungicide mixtures. Seed potato production has been developed after extensive research but further problems are to be solved to ensure its success which is viral in order to lower potato production costs. Improvement has also been achieved in cultivation practices, and pest and weed control. Better production efficeincy and a good co-ordination of production have enabled the country to achieve self-sufficiency in potato while its consumption has increased appreciably.
