Abstract (AB)Sulfentrazone at rates varying between 0.6 and 1.8 kg a.i./ha alone and at 0.75 and 1.125 kg/ha tank-mixed with atrazine or diuron at 2.0 kg a.i./ha were compared to a standard treatment of oxyfluorfen + diuron at 0.5 + 2.0 kg a.i./ha for the pre-emergence control of weeds in plant cane. Sulfentrazone at 1.5 and 1.8 kg/ha continued to control both broadleaf and grass weeds 12 to 16 weeks after application, with control being comparable to the standard oxyfluorfen + diuron treatment. However, some crop injury was observed at the 1.8 kg/ha rate. Tank-mixing lower rates of sulfentrazone with atrazine or diuron did not improve the level of control. Control of Cyperus rotundus and Kyllinga bulbosa, observed in field trials, was confirmed in the greenhouse. Sulfentrazone at 1.5 kg/ha appears to be promising for broad-spectrum pre-emergence weed control in sugar cane.
