Abstract (AB)	The 0-9 ISSCT scale for rating the resistance of sugarcane varieties to diseases provides a uniform system but has the drawback of being too detailed and it is consequently often wrongly used. It is proposed that only the broad ratings 2, 5 and 8 be used for preliminary tests and that the other ratings be used when more precise assessment of varietal reaction is possible. The regression method is advocated for relating infection levels in field trials to the standard ratings.
