| Potato is an important crop in Mauritius although it is much less important than sugarcane and tea, the main export crops. The development of potato production is, however, fairly recent and self-sufficient was achieved only in 1981. Presently, annual per capita consumption amounts to about 20 kg. The bulk of the potato is consumed as fresh vegetable. Industrial processing is recent and is still very limited. Most of the potato production, either in rotation with or in interrows of sugar cane. Production takes place in the cool season and the excess is cool-stored for use in the warm season. In Mauritius, potato is a controlled commodity. The production quotas are allocated, and the selling price is set by the Agricultural Marketing Board. The Board also sells seed potatoes produced locally by contractors, stores and market ware potatoes. Research is undertaken by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute on all aspects of potato production. The main research achievements are discussed in relation to the removal of constraints. There is need to improve the efficiency in production in order to reduce production costs and hence, to promote the domestic demand. Prospects for the development of the industry are also discussed. | |
