Abstract (AB)The need for a compilation of complete statistics of sugarcane lands on a field basis is discussed with reference to the Land Indexing Project carried out by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute. This project started in 1977 with the indexing of physical characteristics of sugarcane fields was later extended to include agronomic data. The methodology utilized involves the collection of basic field data, the transcription of information available from maps, e.g. soil type, rainfall, agricultural suitability, etc. and their subsequent computer processing. The need for verifying and updating the information obtained from the computer print outs is discussed. Research and Development projects to which the statistics obtained will be applied include the following : planning of agricultural diversification within cane lands, distribution of soil types, cane varieties with respect to geographical parameters and analysis of crop productivity.
