| Two hundred and eighty one sugar cane varieties planted in stage 4 trials (two-line stage) of selection programme were evaluated for yield, pol per cent cane, pol per cent dry matter, fibre per cent cane, fibre per cent dry matter and dry matter per cent cane. Statistical analyses were performed on each character, a fibre index calculated and the results compared to those of a series of standard varieties. One hundred and twenty-nine varieties displayed higher fibre than the average of standards at P 0.25, of which ninety-one had very high fibre (P 0.05). High fibre varieties have generally higher dry matter per cent. Within the group of high fibre cane, eleven (18.6 per cent) had a high cane yield. Varieties displaying high fibre per cent cane, high pol per cent cane and high cane yield, which could be considered useful for commercial exploitation, represented about 2.3 per cent of the population under test. Thees useful varieties possess relatively high cane yield and pol per cent cane with a good balance between pol and fibre. An increase in fibre per cent cane ranging from 10 per cent to 25 per cent was observed. | |
