Abstract (AB)The mode of inheritance of yellow spot disease in sugarcane was studied in seven bi-parental families. The segregation pattern and the frequency distribution of the progeny within infection classes depended largely on the susceptibility levels of the parents. Resistant progeny were obtained in very high frequencies in crosses with at least one resistant parent. Resistant and slightly susceptible progeny were also found in relatively high frequencies within crosses between two susceptible parents and susceptible x slightly susceptible parents. It appears that few genes are involved in the control of yellow spotdisease and that resistance is inherited in a dominant way. The genetic control of yellow spot approached a three gene or four gene model and the degree of resistance seemed to depend upon the number of loci bearing at least one dominant allele. Resistant x resistant parents though desirable, might not be a prerequisite for producing resistant populations as crosses might be extended to include resistant x susceptible parents as well. This allows a wider choice of parents in our breeding programme for specific adaptation to the wet uplands where resistance to yellow spot is of importance.
