Abstract (AB)Yellow leaf syndrome of sugarcane was first observed in Mauritius in 1994 on variety CP 72-1210. Electron microscopy revealed the presence of luteovirus particles associated with the disease. The symptomatology of YLS was followed in the first ratoon of variety CP72-1210. A bright yellow coloration of the midribs developed after seven months on the second to the fifth youngest leaves and the yellowing progressed to cover the lamina. The highest frequency of symptoms occurred on the third leaf. Symptoms were triggered by the onset of cool weather. Symptoms alone were not reliable for diagnosis as the virus was detected in symptomless plants. Double antibody-sandwich ELISA, immunosorbent electron microscopy and tissue blot immunoassay were suitable for virus detection. With the latter, the use of the internode was found to rpoduce a more pronounced reaction that the leaf midrib. In mature cane, the virus was found in all parts of the plant except the roots but its concentration varied. No correlation was observed between leaf age and virus concentration. A high number of virus particles was observed in cane juice, particularly when the juice was obtained from the upper internodes. The indexing of the germplasm collection and commercial fields indicated that the virus is widely distributed in Mauritius.
