Abstract (AB)The sugarcane stem borer Chilo sacchariphagus (Bojer) has been a chronic pest in Mauritius since its introduction in the middle of the 19th century. The circumstances surrounding its introduction are described, the exact identity and world distribution of the insect are discussed and knowledge of its biology and bionomics is reviewed. Data compiled on the incidence of crop damage by the borer is summarized and discussed, as also are the endeavours made to control the pest.
