Abstract (AB)The material discussed relates to scientific investigations in the Mascarene islands of Isle de France (Mauritius) and Bourbon (Réunion) in the second half of the eighteenth and the early years of the nineteenth century. It spans the activities of three generations of naturalists: the first working with Pierre Poivre during his years of office as Intendant; the second gravitating round the Jardin du Roi, Pamplemousses, when Nicolas Céré was its Director; the third working on a programme evolved by the Société des Sciences et Arts de l'Isle de France during the brief but productive stay of the scientific staff of Nicolas Baudin.
