Abstract (AB)If cabbage palm is to be planted on a large scale in Mauritius, it is imperative that chemical weeding be practised because manual weeding would prove inefficient and too costly due to the high labour requirement which is not always available, particularly during the sugar cane harvest season. From the three trials laid down between 4 and 6 weeks after transplanting the palms, both pre- and post-emergence treatments, which have proved safe to the crop and effective on a wide weed spectrum, have been found. The best pre-emergence treatment has been a mixture of diuron and atrazine at (4 + 2) kg a.i./ha. In post-emergence treatment has been a mixture of diuron and paraquat was very satisfactory. For problem weeds, glyphosate gave spectacular results but at 4 kg a.e./ha (the highest rate tested) it was moderately phytotoxic to the young palm trees unless the latter were covered to avoid the spray. Asulox was also found safe and effectively controlled certain Paspalum spp. Bromacil and terbacil whether used alone or mixed with paraquat and irrespective of whether the palms were covered or not were too phytotoxic at the rates used.
