Abstract (AB)Improvements in sugar yields at the beginning of the harvesting period are essential for the Mauritian sugar industry. These improvements can be achieved through the use of artificial ripeners or through the development of early ripening varieties. Recent work carried out at MSIRI on breeding for earliness of ripening in sugar cane is briefly reviewed. Two trials are discussed. The first trial involved twelve families from biparental crosses between varieties with varying ripening characteristics, while the second comprised 53 varieties selected from the first ttrial on the basis of high sucrose content. The results indicated that sufficient variation in sucrose content existed for the purposes of breeding and that no consistent negative associations between sucrose content and cane yield were demonstrated. Sucrose content were shown to be highly heritable. Progress due to selection (genetic advance) was positive for all characters measured and was greater at early than mid-season harvest. The economic impact of early ripening varieties on the Mauritian sugar industry is discussed.
