Abstract (AB)Visual evaluation of varietal reaction to rust, a foliar disease of sugar cane caused by Puccinia melanocephala, is particularly difficult as no disease assessment keys have been developed and is further subject to human error. A video image analyser has been tested to determine rust infection in 74 seedlings issued from the cross between Q96 (susceptible) x M 1030/71 (resistant). The total infected leaf area per seedling ranged from 0 to 35 per cent with 65 per cent of the seedlings having infection between 10-20 per cent. The highest infection per leaf was found to be 86 per cent and was greatest on the third leaf. The mean of infection on leaves 3 and 4 best reflected the overall infection of the seedling. The correlation coefficient between these two variables was highly significant (r=0.794). These results were confirmed in a second trial on seedlings issuing from a cross between M 134/75 (resistant) x M1030/71 and the correlation coefficient (r=0.948) was found to be higher than in the first study. Video image analysis will be useful for varietal evaluation at an early stage and for studies on quantitative genetics of rust and yellow spot. The device would also help in the design of disease assessment keys for field evaluation.
