Abstract (AB)The effect of race 3 of gumming disease on growth and yield was studied in two susceptible sugarcane varieties M 1318/64 and M 377/56, in a field trial consisting of two separate blocks, one of which was inoculated with the bacterium. Growth as well as cane and sugar yields were reduced significantly by foliar striping and systemic infection in both varieties, in plant cane and in first ratoons. Sucrose content was in general lower in diseased canes, reaching significant levels of reduction at harvest in shoots of variety M 1318/64 with systemic infection in plant cane and in ratoons. In shoots with striping, a similar effect was observed in ratoons in July in M 1318/64 and in September in both varieties. A significant reduction in the number of millable stalks was found in diseased plots in ratoons. The pathogen was more damaging to M 1318/64 than to M 377/56, owing to the greater tolerance of the latter variety. The policy of selecting varieties resistant to the disease for large scale cultivation is discussed in the light of the detrimental effect on cane assessed in the trial. It is concluded that damage caused by gumming justifies the strict measures adopted so far for its control.
