Abstract (AB)Cane trashing consists of the removal of dry leaves from the stem and lining all trash on alternate interrows to facilitaate harvest and reduce the amount of extraneous matter sent to the mill. In Mauritius, approximately 50 of cane are manually harvested as green cane. Two trashing are usually carried out, one as from end of March to Mid-May followed by a second one a few days prior to harvest. A significant reduction in cane yield was observed in plots trashed in April compared to those trashed only one week before harvest (1993). Trials between 1994 and 1998 have confirmed that early trashing may lead to a reduction in cane yield. Among possible causes identified were: mechanical injury, shock suffered by the stalk due to accidental removal of green leaves, emergence of more water-shoots and suckers canes brokend during trashing.
