Abstract (AB)The merit of providing sugar cane during its elongation phase a supplementary N rate of 120 Kg N/ha over and above the current 120 Kg N/ha recommended was investigated in first ratoon cane at two sites (Mon Rocher and Union Park) differing in climatic conditions. The results showed that the response to N was dependent on the availability of soil mineral N. Supplementary N enhanced N uptake but did not further improve tiller density, leaf area index nor their longevity as already found with the current single dose of 120 kg N/ha 1-2 month after harvest of preceding crop. An increase in green cane yield and dry matter was observed at Union Park as a result of applying an additional single dressing of 120 kg N/ha at elongation phase of growth.
