Abstract (AB)The incidence of virus diseases of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) in Mauritius was investigated in fields samples by Electron microscopy and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELIS). Two virus diseases, potato virus Y (PVY) and tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) were found to be widespread. ELISA may differentiate two strains of PVY the virus. Samples collected from 1995 to 1997 showed a marked prevalence of PVY (o) and PVY (N) in tomato. A host preference seemed to be present with PVY (N) mostly confined to potato and PVY (O) to tomato, although the latter strain is also common on potato. The high incidence of PVY indicates transmission by aphid vectors. The spread of the two viruses as followed in a field at Medine on varieties Sirius and MST 32/1. Measures such as seed treatment reducing plant density and frequent handling of plants, avoiding clipping of plants resulted into practically virus-free plantations. The need for a global strategy in the control of virus diseases of tomato is discussed.
