Abstract (AB)The Agricultural Information System (AIS) for sugar cane in Mauritius is often depicted as being composed of three main sub-systems, namely Sugar Cane Growers, Extension and Research. All three components of the AIS are sources of information and innovations. Since the Miller-Planters and the Owner-Planters of the Growers sub-system have differential access to resources, they do not always use the same channels for obtaining information and, in general, their information seeking behaviour is also different. The Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (MSIRI) is responsible for research on sugar cane and its Extension and various research departments use different methods to disseminate information to various stakeholders of the AIS (e.g. Extension Agents, Agronomists and sugarcane growers). As an application of Information Technology (IT), SIRItell, a computerized information management system, is being developed by the MSIRI to improve the sharing of information with its partners of the AIS. SIRItell enables users to have access to technical and scientific information. It has definite advantages over traditional media such as printed material. However, the use of the Personal Computer (PC) as a communication medium, while being central to the user-friendliness of the application, is for the time being a factor, which limits its diffusion. In order to improve the relevance of SIRItell and to better assess the potential of IT for computer mediated communication (CMC), it is advocated that an audience-based approach involving participatory techniques should be encouraged. There is also a need to consider ways and means to improve the linkages within the AIS in order to make it more compatible with IT. A systems approach provides a useful framework to investigate how the components and interfaces of the system can be remodeled so as to "fit the AIS to the technology"
