Abstract (AB)An annotated list of insect species known to have been introduced into Mauitius in the 20th century is given. Of the 78 insect species, 45 were deliberately introduced and successfully established for the biological control of insect pests and weeds. Of 22 significant pests which entered, 18 did so in the second half of the century and of these no less than 14 arrived subsequent to 1975. Inadvertent insect introductions have increased greatly concomitant with increased traffic, especially by air, between Mauritius and the outside world consequent to the expansion of the Mauritian economy.
