Abstract (AB)This dissertation looks at solving a major irrigation scheduling problem, which consists of planning where and when to irrigate, and how much water to apply, while obtaining optimal yield with minimal irrigation operation costs. Owing to the various constraints existing at farm level in terms of resources and operations, together with the large number of feasible irrigation options that needs to be evaluated, only the use of appropriate computational optimisation techniques can prove to be effective and efficient. A model that integrates all constraints and parameters regarding irrigation scheduling of sugar cane with centre pivots is therefore proposed. This model determines how feasible irrigation schedules can be coded as binary chromosomes. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is then used to improve the chromosomes over several generations until an optimum irrigation option is found. Data from a case study is used to validate results from the GA for a period of four days for which complete enumeration of all feasible options is done. Once the model is validated, the GA is used on an eight-day irrigation schedule and compared to the current farm practice to highlight the benefits of the optimisation exercise.
