| Comments are made on the various changes brought in the breeding and selection programme. The number of foreign parent varieties has been reduced but the number of experimental sites has increased. The selection cycle which lasted 15-18 years has now been reduced to 11-15. Promising varieties are now evaluated earlier in the selection procedure, in observation plots. The distribution of cane varieties and their performance on an industrial scale in various parts of the island are taken into account. A detailed examination is made on the newly released varieties and on promising ones. | |
