Abstract (AB)The "pou à poche blanche", Pulvinaria iceryi (Sign.), infected 4 000-5 000 ha of sugar cane in Mauritius in 1977 and caused a loss of production estimated at 15 000 - 20 000 tonnes of sugar. Many of the infested fields also had to be replanted. The insect sucks the phloem sap and has a particularly noxious action on the plant. The factors regulating its populations are complex but the outbreak in 1977 was probably the indirect result of climatic factors and it is unlikely that serious outbreaks will become more frequent.
