Abstract (AB)Yield variability has been studied in various crops. In sugar cane, it is in its primary stage of investigation. The key issue has been the development of a reliable yield monitor to enable within-field yield mapping. As part of a 4-year project on precision agriculture for sugar cane at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute, a yield monitor coupled with a GPS, mounted on a cane harvester, has been evaluated and used to record within-field yield variability during the 2001 crop season. Using the appropriate technique in a package, maps of yield variability for a few fields have been produced. They show that yield variability within field is significant and occurs in various patterns, in bands or other shapes, characterizing zones of low and high production. Preliminary observations showed that yield variability is related to crop factors, irrigation efficiency and soil conductivity. While the precision achieved with the yield monitor after calibration has been 97 percent of real cane weight, the GPS has given positional accuracy of 2 meters more precise than the manufacturer's specification of 15 meters. Field observations and surveys of soil electromagnetic conductivity are being carried out to understand the causes of yield variability and to address them.
