Abstract (AB)A study was financed by theFonds Europeen de Developpement (FED) to assess the suitability of some river valleys of Rodrigues for irrigation. Soil samples were taken for measurements of moisture holding capacity and in situ infiltration tests were conducted. Long-term meteorological data were used to calculate dependable rainfall and soil moisture deficits, and the electrical conductivity of irrigation water was measured. It was found that the soils had moisture holding capacities that were comparable to those of similar soils in Mauritius and that these were sufficiently high to cater for the demands of most fully-grown crops for a 10-day period. Stabilized infiltration rates were quite high, so that surface irrigation cannot be considered. Moisture deficits were high in summer and available irrigation water had a high electrical conductivity in winter. It was concluded that the most appropriate irrigation system for the existing small-holders was a low- to medium-pressure sprinkler with relatively high application frequencies.
