Abstract (AB)A computer simulation approach was used to evaluate irrigation strategies that would improve the use of limited water supplies through optimum use of effective rainfall while meeting sugarcane water requirement. The results showed that for the site under study, nine out of ten seasons, strategies based on MAD threshold levels equivalent to 140 per cent of Readily Available Water (RAW) used a maximum of 200 mm less water than management allowable soil water deficit levels (MAD) equal to 100 per ent RAW with little or no effects on the level of crop water satisfaction (ETa/ETc). Strategies based on fixed irrigation intervals showed that doses corresponding to 60 per cent replenishment of the root zone depletion at 7 day interval required about 440 mm less water than irrigation doses needed for the complete replacement of the root zone depletion every 2 days, but such strategies could lead to a maximum reduction of 13 per cent in the crop water satisfaction level and could have an impact on achievable yield. Although crop water use could be affected, the benefit of these irrigation strategies relied on substantial saving of water that could be used in other areas hitherto not irrigated because of insufficient waer. Further field studies and financial analyses of the various strategies are needed.
