Abstract (AB)A study was conducted to monitor the efficiency of the centre pivot system by examining evaporation losses of the spray droplets and assessing their effects on the coefficient of uniformity of the system with the use of different types of sprinklers. Evaporation losses of the spray droplets, assessed through an electrical conductivity method ranged from 3 to 17 percent of the total volume discharged by the nozzles. The magnitude of evaporation losses increases with an increase in wind velocity, but decreases with an increase in relative humidity. The study with the different types of sprinklers reveals that compared with the standard spray nozzles, the extent of evaporation losses can be reduced by as much as 50 percent with the use of low drift nozzles as a consequnce of a coarser droplet size distribution; this led to a better quality of irrigation through an improvement in the uniformity of water application. The overall results suggest that apart from climatic factors that affect sprinkling efficiency, the choice of the sprinkler package also determines the quality of irrigation of the centre pivot and should be carefully considered by prospective users.
