Abstract (AB)Microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) have recently being applied to sugarcane and their potential was investigated for study of the genetic diversity amongst noble canes (Saccharum officinarum) and in molecular mapping of progeny of a bi-parental cross (M 134/75 x R 570) segregating for yellow spot disease resistance. Ten SSR primers were tested on 40 noble canes and 128 polymorphic markers were scored. Preliminary fingerprinting analysis indicated distinct groups amongst the noble cane clones with designation Tanna, Bamboo, NG (New Guinea), M (Mauritius) and B (Barbados). Two clones, RP 0000006 and
