Abstract (AB)The possible sources of loss of nitrogen from fertilizers are discussed. With surface applied ammoniacal fertilizers volatilization losses are potentially important even on acid soils. The entire application of fertilizer nitrogen may be lost from the soil in less than one month during rainy season of the tropics. Laboratory studies on the zonal soils indicate the denitrification losses may not be important, contrariwise there is some evidence of non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Sulfate of ammonia is superior to urea: burying improved the efficacy of both fertilizers. N-serve was effective in field trials.
