Abstract (AB)	The importance of plant pathology in the maintenance of agricultural production at its highest economic level is illustrated. An epiphytotic outbreak of gumming disease on sugarcane in Mauritius in 1964,due to a new and more virulent strain of the bacterial pathogen involved, has affected some important commercial varieties hitherto bred for resistance to the old strain present in the island. Research work on the problem was conducted along three main lines: (1) Studies of a practical nature to help establishing an immediate control campaign. After an assessment of the range of susceptibility of several varieties, a programme of varietal replacement has been implemented. The selection of some new varieties was hastened to meet the demand. Owing to a greater number of varieties was hastened to meet the demand. Owing to a greater number of varieties showing susceptibility, the selection scheme has been modified to test for resistance at an earlier stage. (2) Studies to improve knowledge on the evolution of the disease, in p;articular the effect of systemic infection in a tolerant variety. A better understanding of the effect of climatic factors on the development of the disease has been obtained. The importance of infection by knives at harvest has been found. (3) Fundamental studies on the problem ofstrain variation of the pathogen. The existence of a new strain has been confirmed by cultural studies. An hypothesis is put forward concerning the development of the new strain.
