Abstract (AB)An attempt was made at biological control of chlorotic streak disease of sugarcane with the use of organic soil amendments. The effect of scums and molasses applied individually or in combination, were compared to that of their inorganic counterparts, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash, on the re-infection of chlorotic streak as well as on yield in successive ratoons of 2 varieties, M 442/51 (highly susceptible to the disease) and M 93/48 (rated slightly susceptible). Both varieties were planted with hot water treated cuttings. The organic amendments failed to reduce chlorotic streak infection and indeed enhanced it in the variety M 442/51. The differential effect of treatments on disease severity was not due to differences in nutritional status of the plants, as revealed by foliar analysis for N, P, and K. No differences between treatments were found for growth and yield in the earlier ratoons. However, there were indications that yields in M 442/51 were gradually more affected by organic amendments in older ratoons; this was also reflected in death of stools and reduction in the number of ratoon shoots in plots receiving organic amendments after the third ratoon. The effect of organic amendments in favouring the build-up of chlorotic streak infection was confirmed in a second experiment where complete organic treatments were compared to organic treatments in variety M 442/51.
