Abstract (AB)This paper describes the design, operation and evaluation of a pilot subsider rated to handle a maximum of 30 meter cube per hour of effluent representing 30 per cent of total output of the 100 tonnes cane/hour capacity factory. Consideration is especially given to details of liquid inlet and outlets, flow distribution and measurement, solids removal and extraction of underflow. Problems encountered during commissioning and steps taken to remedy them are also described. Tests carried out during normal operation show that a capacity of 9 meter cube per hour per m² of settling area is attainable yielding a supernatant of acceptable quality for recirculation or disposal. Solids removal is of the order of 90 per cent with an underflow rate of 3 per cent of total inflow. The average solids content of underflow is 8,59 per cent with a maximum of 12 per cent. A subsider is therefore a useful complement to a wet scrubber for controlling air pollution, it reduces water pollution by providing the means of recycling water therefore reducing the volume of effluent discharged. It is also easy to install and operate. Treatment of the underflow before disposal requires further investigations.
