Abstract (AB)Efforts presently being made to increase maize production inMauritius are reviewed in the light of experience gained in the past when several attempts to do so were unsuccessful. Past failures resulted mainly from climatic and biological factors and the relatively low economic returns from maize compared to sugar cane. Three methods of growing maize, one ancient and two modern, co-exist in Mauritius. Their characteristics are discussed in relation to the research being carried out on their improvement. Areas where research is most likely to give results are highlighted.
