Abstract (AB)Sloping lands are subject to soil erosion when land is prepared during the warm, wet season in Mauritius. Accordingly, sugarcane growers replant their sugar cane fields during the fairly cool, dry season. Minimum tillage consists of spraying the herbicide Roundup to kill the old crop which is left to rot in situ, thus avoiding soil erosion that would result from land preparation. All trials that have been conducted have shown that g ives minimum tillage the new crop has a better start which results in a substantial increase in yield at harvest. This practice is therefore to be preferred to the usual uprooting of the old crop before replanting.
