Abstract (AB)	In September 1985, a new insect, identified as Thrips palmi, was observed on egg plant in Mauritius. This insect rapidly spread all over the island attaining pest proportions on egg plant, potato and some other crops. Severe losses were caused to the potato production in 1986. The biology, nature of damage and recommended methods of control are described in this paper.
