Abstract (AB)The presently used modified Truog method with 0.01M H2SO4 as extractant fails in numerous instances to predict the P status of soils in Mauritius. This may be explained by 0.01M H2SO4 removing mainly Ca-bound phosphate from the soils. In view of the significance of Al-P in the P supplying capacity of soils a more accurate assessment of P available to sugar cane could therefore only be obtained if both the Al-P and the Ca-P are solubilized. This may be achieved by simultaneously raising the concentration of H2SO4 to 0.1M and reducing the extractant to soil ratio from 100:1 to 50:1. The data from 2 fields trials showed that P extracted by 0.1M H2SO4 was more closely related to cane and sugar yields than when 0.01M H2SO4 was the extractant. The data moreover showed that sugar cane yield responses to P fertilization would not be obtained once the 0.1M H2SO4 extractable P in the soils of Mauritius exceeds 80 ppm P.
