Abstract (AB)	Data gathered from Stage 2 of sugar cane selection programme were used to evaluate the potential of parents used in crossing since 1966, with the help of the computer. Selection rates were calculated for each cross and converted into ratios which enabled specific (SCA) and general (GCA) combining abiliities to be estimated. SCA and G CA values were graded according to their magnitude and to the number of varieties tested. The parent evaluation programme has enabled a more rational use of varieties during crossing. Possible improvements to the existing evaluation are envisaged.
