Abstract (AB)In dry, nonirrigated fields green cane harvesting has a highly positive effect on cane yield, particularly when trash blanketing is adopted after harvest. In wet areas trash blanketing has also shown good potential with reduced labour requirements, improved weed control and increased yields when rainfall is inadequate in the elongation phase. Chopper-harvesters working in green cane form a uniform trash blanket, which has a positive effect on cane yield and weed control.
