Abstract (AB)The new herbicide halosulfuron (Servian) has been evaluated as an alternative to hormone-type herbicides against Cyperus rotundus (nutgrass) in sugarcane. As a post-emergence spray at 0.02, 0.04 and 0.08 kg a.i. ha -1, halosulfuron (with an oil-based adjuvant, Complement), gave a percentage weed kill ranging between 75 to 98 percent and was superior to Actril-DS at 1.3 kg a.e. ha -1. The product was well tolerated by sugar cane except for variety R 570 in which a depressive effect was noted on young canes at the highest rate. In cane rotation land, halosulfuron at 0.08 kg a.i. ha -1 was comparable to glyphosate at 1.0 kg a.e. ha -1. Its efficacy was significantly reduced when mixed with atrazine or diuron.
