Abstract (AB)The trends in thequality of cane sent to sugar factories in Mauritius are examined in terms of fibre percent cane, sucrose percent cane, sucrose fibre ration in cane and mixed juice purity, using the data from the last 35 years. An attempt is made to highlight some of the detrimental effects of poor cane quality on factory performance, in particular, mill extraction, weight of bagasse per cent cane, sucrose lost percent cane in bagasse, filter cake and molasses. Changes made to factory equipment to accommodate the gradual decline in cane quality are also discussed.
