Abstract (AB)Fertilizer N requirements of sugar cane as a function of ratoon age were studied in nine field trials in Mauritius. The data showed that although cane and sugar yields of varieties R570 and M3035/66 decreased with increasing age of ratoon, the responses to 50 Kg N / ha increments in the late ratoons were comparable or even larger than those observed in young ratoons. Since net revenues accruing from N fertilization and economic optimum N requirements were the same for both varieties irrespective of ratoon age, there was no justification for increasing N rates in old ratoon cane.
